FAQs - Debit Cards
Contactless technology is a fast and convenient way to pay for purchases without entering a PIN. Simply tap your contactless card on the reader, and if the payment is successful, you will hear a beep and see a green light. If the payment is unsuccessful, a red light will appear on the reader’s screen.
Note: For your first transaction, you will need to enter your PIN. Once this is done, you can use your contactless card for all future transactions without needing to enter your PIN, unless specified otherwise for security purposes.
You can use your contactless card anywhere you see the contactless symbol. Simply tap your card over the reader to make a payment. If your purchase is under £45, no PIN is required. You can use the contactless feature in various places, such as shops, public transport, and more.

The previous limit for contactless card payments was £30. However, from 1 April 2020, many retailers in the UK started accepting payments up to £45. If your transaction exceeds £30 and is declined, it may be because the retailer’s terminal has not yet been updated to support the new limit. In this case, you will need to use Chip and PIN to complete the transaction.
The daily spending limit for contactless payments can vary based on your bank or card provider. Typically, after making a series of contactless payments, you may be prompted to enter your PIN for added security. You can check with your bank for the exact limit, as it may differ depending on the institution and card type.
There are no additional charges or fees for using contactless payments. However, standard fees and charges may apply depending on your card type. For more details, please contact your Relationship Manager or refer to Visa Classic Personal Debit Card for more information.

If you have insufficient funds on your contactless card, you may still be able to start your journey. However, TfL will check if there are enough funds to cover the fare. If there are not enough funds, you will be blocked from continuing your journey until the outstanding balance is settled.

Contactless payments are designed to prevent accidental charges. If you are carrying two contactless cards, it is best to keep them separate. The card reader will only process one transaction at a time, and industry-standard security technology ensures that payments are not processed multiple times if more than one card is nearby.
While it is highly unlikely that your card details can be stolen using contactless technology, the information transmitted during a contactless transaction only includes the card number and expiration date. This is not enough on its own for someone to make unauthorised purchases. Additionally, contactless cards use encryption for security, and real-time transaction alerts help you spot any suspicious activity. Always report any lost or stolen cards immediately.
